OPINION - Bugs Aren't Bad. By Will Matyjevich

Please enjoy this opinion article from DMHS's "Introduction to Journalism" class!

Many people fear insects, but they never seem to realize how fascinating bugs can be. One example would be cockroaches, cockroaches are seen as invasive, disgusting creatures that crawl around and make weird clicking noises, but roaches in general can be really cool, because of how they eat waste and make it into organic material. Roaches are some of the reasons why our world isn't flooded with garbage.

People also seem to see bugs as ‘creepy and crawly’ but they're actually way more fascinating than just that. Millipedes and Centipedes can be really creepy sometimes, but they can also be really cool. According to fossils, scientists have discovered that Millipedes were probably some of the first land animals, that makes them very neat. Centipedes however, can regrow legs and are also ancient, like Millipedes. Millipedes also have twice as many legs as Centipedes, making Millipedes twice as ‘creepy and crawly’.

Society sees butterflies as the most beautiful and kind insect, but there are a lot of beautiful beetles and other bugs out there. For example, Ghost mantis, Christmas beetles, Golden Tortoise beetles, Io moths, Allotopus beetles and Goliath beetles are all beautiful insects that are not butterflies. There are thousands and thousands of bugs in our world, and it's rare for people to realize how amazing some can be.

Roaches are the #1 most hated bug in the United states, but some roaches can be very interesting. For instance, Dubia roaches are completely harmless, make no noise, and can't jump or climb on walls. They look very similar to Isopods, except for their antennae shape. On that topic, Isopods are an unrecognized bug by society, and they're most commonly known as Roly Polys or pill bugs because of the small gray Isopods that are scattered everywhere over colorado. Isopods are a lot more than pill bugs though, isopods can be big or small, yellow or gray, and they can be so fascinating.

Society should start paying more attention to the amazing bugs that exist besides butterflies or ladybugs because of their bright colors. Bugs should also be seen for more than just reptile feeders or creepy crawly things. Overall, there are many bugs that are unrecognized by society and they deserve to be known and seen for the amazing and helpful bugs that they are.
