The Black Lives Matter Movement, by Quincy Donalde

Black Lives Matter is a current social movement that tries to prove a point on how black lives matter. BLM protests against police brutality and how black Americans are treated.

In 2020, the movement truly gained momentum when George Floyd was killed. People started breaking and burning down buildings and marching and protesting in many American cities. I feel like this was their last choice to get heard. I say this because in 2013 a man named George Zimmerman killed a 17-year-old boy named Treyvon Martin. Martin was just walking home from the store when he was killed by Zimmerman, and Zimmerman said that Martin was a threat even though he was unarmed. When that happened, there were even more peaceful protests but that didn't stop the police. They kept killing innocent black people and when they killed George Floyd that was the last straw, that is when everything started getting crazy.

When Treyvon Martin was killed there was an activist named Alicia Garza who made a post on Facebook saying, ¨Our lives matter.¨ When she did that people agreed with her, so she and other activists planned a movement that became “Black Lives Matter.” There were two more people that helped her make that post and their names were Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi; they also were leaders and helped the BLM movement gain ground.
