OPINION - Does Money Buy You Happiness? By Simon Lapham

Please enjoy this opinion article from DMHS's "Introduction to Journalism" class!

In the U.S., money is an important resource of your daily life. Money can buy anything from chips to a multi-million dollar house, but most U.S. citizens don't have that much money. What all people do have, is the ability to decide what they want to buy. So money can buy you happiness even if you don't have a million dollars. You just need to be able to know what makes you happy.

According to psychologists that researched if money makes people happy, “Most people are happier when they spend money on someone else rather than themselves.” Which I agree with. While spending money on yourself makes you happy, spending money on someone else can make you happy and successful. I would say that when you buy something for someone else that makes them super happy it feels 100 times better than buying something for yourself.

A lot of people will say that money doesn't buy happiness, but I greatly disagree. With money, you are able to buy others things, and yourself things. But I do agree that the amount of money you make can affect your happiness. For example: According to research by Nature Human Behavior, If you are making more than 100,000 dollars a year, it is scientifically proven that your happiness level is below that of others making a maximum of 100,000 dollars a year. When making more than 100,000 every year you are able to buy a lot of things for yourself and others. Even though this can make you feel really good, it can also make expensive items and things you get a lot, way less rewarding than if you have a lower income. But this isn't true for all people.

As I said before, money can buy you happiness if you buy things important to you. But if you are buying things just because you can, it won't make you happy. So no matter how much money you have, next time you buy something make sure it's something that makes you or someone else happy.
